Munnar is a typical hill station, and was the summer resort of the British. Tourists come here to see the vast tea plantations of the area. The town itself is typically Indian with the usual shops, guest houses and is really beautiful and traditional. It is a good place to stay to see the surrounding countryside. It is also a popular place for Indian honeymooners.   The town is divided into two parts, Old Munnar, where the tourist information office is, and Munnar, where the bus station and most guest houses are located.   Munnar is 1,600 m (5,400 ft) above sea level. It is pronounced “Moon-aar” short for “moonu aar” meaning 3 rivers. Three rivers – Madupetti, Nallathanni and Periavaru which flow through this town, but join some distance away from Munnar.   Munnar is famous for its tea plantations, many of them started by the British. The “Kannan Devan” brand of Tea from the Tata is cultivated and processed here.   The strobilanthus (“neelakurinji” in Malayalam, the local language), a blue flower which blooms only every 12 years, is found in this region. It bloomed last in December 2006. Munnar also has the highest peak in South India, Anamudi, at 2,695 m.   Eravikulam national park is one of the main tourist attractions, where you can find the endagered species of Nilgiri Tahr (mountain goat called “varayadu” in Malayalam). A treck to Rajamala (“King of hills” in Malayalam), in the morning is sure to spot a few friendly mountain goats. You can also fond Gaur, Langur, Lion-tailed macaque, and Elephants depending on the season and time of travel. The altitude is 1,600-1.800 m above sea level. Temperature ranges from a minimum of 0⁰C to a maximum of 28⁰C. Warm clothes and rain gear is recommended. The tourist season is from Aug-Mar.

Tourist Spots to Visit: - 

Towards Mattuppetty  

1. Blossam Park, (1 km from Munnar). Rose Garden.
2. Photo Point, (2 km from Munnar). It is a small place filled with woods and a small stream. Good location to take photos.
3. Mattupetti Dam, (10 km from Munnar), this popular picnic spot activities like boating and horse riding and is a great place to spend the day e specially if visiting with children. You could take the speed boat ride which is fantastic. It costs Rs 300 if you have to hire a boat for you alone. The ride is for 15 min. The maximum capacity is 5 persons and you could save some money if you are a group of 4-5.
4. Echo Point, (15 km from Munnar), on the way to top station from Munnar is a small lake set amidst rolling hills. Every loud call made from a spot on the lake embankment is returned manifold by the echo from the surrounding hills. Young tourists throng to this place to listen to the echoes of their friendship calls.
5. Elephant Arrival Spot, (18 km from Munnar), Here you can board an elephant for a ride. It costs approximately Rs 350 per person.
6. Kundala Lake, (23 km from Munnar). This lake is very beautiful amidst lush jungles. Hiring a pedal boat and exploring the lake and its surroundings is an awesome experience. Except at the place you hired the boat, don’t expect to find humans around the lake as it is surrounded by scenic jungles and hills. Unless you know how to row a boat, prefer a pedal boat, each trip lasts around 30 min and will be closed at 4:30PM

 Towards Marayoor

1. Tata Tea Museum’, (Around 2 km on the Nallathany road, from Munnar). Tourists can see pieces of colonial era and old bits collection. Videography and photography is strictly prohibited here. This museum remains open from 10AM-4PM every day, closed on Mon. There is a Rs 50 ticket fee for adults and Rs 25 ticket for children.
2. Eravikulam (Rajamalai) National Park, [2] (45 min from Munnar). See Nilgiri Thar (Hemitragas hylocres) – an endangered species of mountain goats, rolling grasslands and sholas, spread over 97² km in the Rajamalai hills, rare flora and fauna, Atlas moth (largest in the world), lion-tailed macaque, leopards, tigers, The Kurichi or Neelakurinji Flowers turn the hills of Rajamalai blue every 12 years. The next bloom will be in 2018. One can actually debate if going to the high peak just to see some goats is worth all the effort or not. However, the walk along the park is very romantic and has some breath taking view.
3. Anamudi Peak inside Eravikulam National Park, The highest peak (2,695 m) south of the Himalayas, towers over the sanctuary in majestic pride. The slopes of the hills abound in all kinds of rare flora and fauna. The Atlas moth, the largest of its kind in the world, is a unique inhabitant of the park. Other rare species of fauna found here are the Nilgiri Langur, the lion-tailed macaque, leopards, tigers. An ideal place for trekking, facilities are provided here and tourists are allowed to go on foot up to Anamudi.

However the following explanation makes much sense. By pronunciation with long Tamil ‘O’ as KO….DAI means the “The Summer” and KANAL means “T0 see”, which means a place to see in summer. Kodaikanal is actually a summer forest.

History

The earliest residents of Kodaikanal were the Palaiyar tribal people. The earliest specific references to Kodaikanal and the Palani Hills are found in Tamil Sangam literature of the early Christian era. Modern Kodaikanal was established by American Christian missionaries and British bureaucrats in 1845, as a refuge from the high temperatures and tropical diseases of the plains. In the 20th century a few elite Indians came to realize the value of this enchanting hill station and started relocating here.

Tourism has been impacted by industrial pollution issues including the closure of a mercury factory owned by Unilever’s Indian subsidiary Hindustan Unilever after evidence of widespread mercury pollution. ^to date no proper clean-up operation has been mounted.

Silver Cascade

8 kilometers (5.0 mi) from Kodaikanal at a wide bend in the long and winding Laws Ghat Road, at altitude 1,800 meters (5,900 ft), is a 55-meter (180 ft) waterfall formed from the outflow of Kodaikanal Lake. The water quality is reportedly poor and not good enough for bathing. This impressive waterfall is a popular stop for first-time visitors. There are a few souvenir and fruit vendors and many monkeys here. There is also a smaller but more serene waterfall below the bridge which crosses the stream here.

Kodaikanal Lake,

500 meters (1,600 ft) from the bus stand, is an artificial, roughly star-shaped 45 ha (60 acres) lake built in 1863. It is recognized as Kodaikanal’s most popular geographic landmark and tourist attraction. Rowboats and pedalos can be hired at the Kodaikanal Boat Club with its main entrance near the only five-star hotel in Kodaikanal, The Carlton. Horses and bicycles can be hired beside the lake for short periods. The 5 kilometers (3.1 mi) path that skirts the periphery of this lovely lake is a favorite walk for the locals and tourists alike.

Green Valley View, (formerly called Suicide Point)..

5.5 kilometres (3.4 mi) from the bus-stand and near the golf course, has an excellent panoramic view of the plains and a sheer drop of 1,500 meters (4,900 ft) overlooking the Vaigai Dam to the south. The stairway leading up to it is highly commercialized and lined with rows of shops to tempt tourists.

8 kilometres (5.0 mi) from the bus-stand, is a set of three giant rock pillars which stand 122 meters (400 ft) high. Managed by the Tamil Nadu Forest Department, The viewpoint can be crowded but is not commercialized. There is an excellent public garden adjacent to the viewpoint.

Coaker’s Walk…

500 metres (1,600 ft) from the bus-stand, constructed by Lt.Coaker in 1872, is a 1-kilometre (3,300 ft) paved pedestrian path running along the edge of steep slopes on the southern side of Kodai. The walk, winding around Mount Nebo, starts in front of the Van Allen hospital, running parallel to the Van Allen Hospital Road and joins the main road beside St.Peter’s Church, providing a stunning panoramic view of the plains. On a clear day one can view as far as Dolphin’s Nose in the south, the valley of the Pambar River in the southeast, Periyakulam town and even the city of Madurai. A fascinating rare phenomenon called Brocken spectre can be witnessed, when a person can see his shadow on the clouds with a rainbow halo. This occurs when the sun is behind the viewer and clouds and mist are to the front. There is an observatory with a telescope halfway along the walk. Entrance fee to the walkway is nominal and it is open all year.

Made popular by the Tamil movie Guna, previously called Devil’s Kitchen, are deep bat-infested chambers between the three gigantic boulders that are the Pillar Rocks. The deep narrow ravines of the caves are now closed to public due to the tragic deaths of twelve youths there. These dangerous caves are highly protected now, and tourists can see sections of the cave system from afar.

4 kilometers (2.5 mi) from the bus-stand, is famous for its Kurinji flower which blossoms in the area only once every 12 years. The deity here is called Sri Kurinji Easwaran, who is in fact Lord Murugan. This temple was built in 1936 by a European lady, who on coming to India, converted to Hinduism. She changed her name to Leelavathi and married a Mr.Ramanathan. She is also known as Lady Ramanathan. This temple is under the management of Arulmighu Dhandayuthapani Swamy Thiru Kovil, Palani.

Puducherry is one of the most popular tourist destinations in South India. The city has many colonial buildings, churches, temples, and statues, which, combined with the systematic town planning and the well planned French style avenues, still preserve much of the colonial ambience.

The most popular tourist destinations are the four beaches in Puducherry, which are Promenade Beach, Paradise Beach, The Auroville Beach and Serinity Beach.  Sri Aurobindo Ashram located on rue de la Marine (Gingee Salai) , is one of the most well known and wealthiest ashrams in India. Auroville (City of Dawn) is an “experimental” township located 8 km North-West of Puducherry. Auroville is meant to be a universal town where men and women of all countries are able to live in peace and progressive harmony, above all creeds, all politics and all nationalities^.

There are a number of eighteenth and nineteenth century churches in Puducherry as well as a number of heritage buildings and monuments are present around the Promenade beach such as the Children’s Park & Dupleix Statue, Gandhi statue, Nehru Statue, Le Café, French War Memorial, 19th Century Light House, Bharathi Park, Governers Palace, Romain Rolland Library, Legislative Assembly, Puducherry Museum, and the French Institute of Pondicherry at Saint-Louis Street.

Sri Aurobindo Ashram

Today, the ashram is a large institution in the downtown area of Pondicherry. It provides many charitable benefits to the area, including free medical facilities and a publishing house. It also includes the School for Perfect Eyesight, a centre promoting the use of the controversial Bates method that claims to improve and restore vision without the use of glasses.

The ashram’s effects spring up across the town: local businesses include the “Sri Aurobindo Autocare Services,” “Cottage Industries” and “Sri Aurobindo Handmade Paper.” among others. Most famously, the alternative community Auroville (pop. 1800) sits outside the town…

On the first day morning we went to ashram for darshan. It was a nice experience. Atmosphere was calm and quite. I enjoyed being there.

After a nice and holy food from ashran canteen we decided to go to near by beach, this beach is called as Promenade Beach. You can find all important govt establishment on this beach like Chief Secretariat, Pondichery Municipality, Governor House, Parliament Etc. you can find few other structure as well.. like War Memorial, A French War memorial, Gandhi Statue, Old Light House and beautiful hotels… Main thing I did not like about this beach is : Not allowed to go to water.

On Day 2 after a nice breakfast, We took a bike on Rent. One nice thing about the pondichery is that you get bike very easily with good price 150/day.  We found out that there are two more beaches One is called Island Beach (Paradise Beach) And another one is Aurovile Beach. We went to Aurovile on the third day of our visit.. I found the History of the Auroville from Wiki Page.. its interesting…

Auroville was founded as a project of Sri Aurobindo Society on Wednesday 28 February, 1968 by Mirra Alfassa, “The Mother”. She was an equal spiritual collaborator of Sri Aurobindo, who believed that “man is a transitional being”. The Mother expected that this experimental “universal township” would contribute significantly in the “progress of humanity towards its splendid future by bringing together people of goodwill and aspiration for a better world.” The Mother also believed that such a universal township will contribute decisively to the Indian renaissance (Ref. Mother’s Agenda, Vol. 9, dt.3.02.68). The Government of India endorsed the township, and in 1966, UNESCO also endorsed it inviting the member-states to participate in the development of Auroville. UNESCO re-endorsed Auroville four times more in the course of the last 40 years^..

In the inauguration ceremony attended by delegates of 124 nations on 28 February 1968, The Mother gave Auroville its 4-point Charter setting forth her vision of Integral living:

1. Auroville belongs to nobody in particular. Auroville belongs to humanity as a whole. But to live in Auroville, one must be the willing servitor of the Divine Consciousness.
2. Auroville will be the place of an unending education, of constant progress, and a youth that never ages.
3. Auroville wants to be the bridge between the past and the future. Taking advantage of all discoveries from without and from within, Auroville will boldly spring towards future realisations.
4. Auroville will be a site of material and spiritual researches for a living embodiment of an actual Human Unity.

The Mother repeatedly warned against the danger of Auroville falling under the control of Government of India, which eventually did happen a few years after her death, following a long conflict between Aurovilians and the Sri Aurobindo Society.

The Matrimandir

The Matrimandir took 37 years to build, from the laying of the foundation stone at sunrise on 21st February 1971 – the Mother’s 93rd birthday – to completion in May 2008. It is in the form of a huge sphere surrounded by twelve pedestals. The central dome is covered by golden discs and reflects sunlight, which gives the structure its characteristic radiance. Inside this central dome is a meditation hall known as the inner chamber – this contains the largest optically-perfect glass globe in the world. The Matrimandir, and its surrounding gardens in the central Peace Area, is fully open to the public by appointment. You can take the appointment by calling +91-4132622268. Be on time for meditation .

In a country where history is measured in terms of millenniums, religion most understandably takes a front seat. The influx of pilgrims to the holy places in Jeypore, yet again prove the significance of religion irrespective of the small town phenomenon. Gupteswar Jeypore is a famous cave shrine visited by pilgrims even from the neighboring state of Chhattisgarh. The sacred lingam is hidden by rocks and is termed `Gupteswar’ or the Hidden God and is much revered as Gupta Kedar by the people of nearby Madhya Pradesh who throng the hillside to worship the deity.

The cave shrine of Gupteswar In Jeypore In India is dedicated to Lord Shiva- the destroyer among the holy trinity in Hindu mythology. On Shiva Ratri the Gupteswar In Orissa is flocked by pilgrims all day and all night long. Men, women and children visit the temple on that auspicious day with offerings of flowers, fruits, milk, sweets and bhang. The Gupteswar Jeypore offers quite a feast for the non believers as well, since the cave shrine offers a panoramic view of the surroundings and makes a beautiful sight in itself.

Gupteswar Jeypore is located 58 km from Jeypore town and regular buses, taxis and auto rickshaws are available from the town centre to the shrine. It is better to hire an auto for the to and fro journey if you are in a group of three or four.

Jeypore, also spelled Jeypur and Jaypur, is the largest town in the Koraput District of Orissa, India. Along with Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Sambalpur, Rourkela, Balasore, Puri and Berhampur, Jeypore is one of the prominent places of Orissa. It is encompassed by hills of the Eastern Ghats and the more famous Araku hills on three sides like a horse shoe, and the other (western) side opens up to Chattisgarh in central India. It is also the business hub for the district and South Orissa.

Jeypore is located at 18°51′N 82°35′E / 18.85, 82.58^[1]. It has an average elevation of 659 metres (2165 feet).

As of 2001 India census^[2], Jeypore had a population of 76,560. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Jeypore has an average literacy rate of 69%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 76%, and female literacy is 61%. In Jeypore, 12% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Jeypore has an airport, which was made non-operational after a few years of inauguration. The nearest functional airport is at Vishakapatnam, 300 km away. One can reach Jeypore from Visakhapatnam by boarding the Kirandul passenger train or take one of the numerous taxis/cabs or buses. The 295 km ride takes approximately seven hours, and is an enthralling experience, covering approximately 250 km of the scenic hills of Araku Valley. It is also possible to reach Jeypore by buses and taxis available at the Vishakapatnam and Vizianagaram RTC bus-stand. The capital of Orissa, Bhubaneswar, is 520 km from Jeypore. Apart from regular bus service, the Hirakhand Express takes you to Jeypore in about 14 hours from Bhubaneswar. It runs daily to and from – Koraput (~14 km from Jeypore) to Bhubaneswar.

College has been a value proposition in providing quality education to people of undivided Koraput district for a very long time.

Blessed with abundant natural resources, beautiful landscapes, chain of hills, scenic waterfalls and lakes, Jeypore is a place of historical, pilgrimage and tourist interest. Jeypore is well linked to Raipur (by road), Visakhapatnam, Rayagada, Howrah (by rail and road) and to the state capital Bhubaneswar (by rail and road). Lodging and boarding facilities are available for outstation tourists by the Lord Jagannath Temple Trust. Jeypore has very scenic surroundings, encompassed by hills on all sides. On the east is the protective hill Nakti Dongar, from where the town actually begins and spreads towards the west. Below Nakti Dongar is the famous place Purunagarh, which has many age od temples buit by ancient rulers of Jeypore. Jeypore is also the business hub for the district and has most of the modern amenities. The town is famous for the ancient palaces. It has a nice cultural mix with significant numbers of people speaking different languages – Oriya, Telugu and Hindi.

Ancient temples still exist in the town. Kali, Dongar Devi, Neelakantheswara, Panchanana, Jagat Janini and Jagannath temples are very famous. A Gurudwara, a Church, a Mosque, an Aiyyappa temple and a Shiridi Sai Baba temple are also famous. There is a lot of sight-seeing nearby Jeypore. Kolab dam (water reservoir) and Machkund dam (water reservoir) are near Jeypore which generate most of the electricity for the state. It has many scenic natural parks, virgin forests and waterfalls in and around. Nalco or National Aluminium Company has its bauxite mines nearby at Damanjodi.

Hotels and restaurants(like Hotel Madhumati, Hotel Princess, Hotel Hello Jeypore, Hotel Trupti Gold at Lal Street, etc.) are amongst the best in the state in their range.

The climate is never harsh but the best time to visit Jeypore is in winter/spring (November – March).

The most popular food items you will find at Jeypore are: Idlis, Dosas(particularly Rava Dosa), Puri, Upma, Egg & Chicken roll, Samosa or Singada, Aalu chop, Pesarat and Vada. Evidently, it is a mix of all the good things from North, South and East India. Most of the food/snacks is served with curry (unlike sambar in South India). Sweets include – Rasgulla, Chhena podo, Kheersagar, Chhena gaja, etc., which can only be relished in this place. For lunch, you have both North Indian and South Indian food apart from some very good Gujarati food. You also get authentic Oriya food replete with its famous veg and non-veg dishes at most restaurants. It is notable that the food, be it North or South Indian, is in no way inferior and has the authentic and sometimes even better taste than the original.

Some popular restaurants are Konark Hotel, Sahu Tifin Shop, Manis Cafe, Lokesh Hotel, Girija Egg Roll Centre and many Chaat outlets (with unique kachoris) on the main road. One of the best things found in Jeypore is the several ‘Tiffin centres’ dotted along the main road like the Panigrahi Hotel near Raj Mahal Chowk, Biswanath Hotel, Bulu Kumti Hotel near Sadar Police Station, etc. These hotels serve delicious and spicy snacks like Puri, Upma, Idli, Rava Dosa along with Aloo-channa curry, Chutneys and the very special Tomato jholo. Because of the sublime taste, most people prefer to have breakfast at these places rather than other ‘posh’ restaurants.

Tribal Dance (Dhangdi Nach)

All India Radio – Jeypore, is an old radio station which has many award winning programmes to its credit. Cinema theatres like Sri Krishna Talkies, Laxmi Talkies and Manoj Kumar Talkies are the sources of entertainment for the people of Jeypore. Apart from these, entertainment sources like the boating facility is also available at Jagannath Sagar (a lake situated in the middle of the town), which draws people from far-off places. Various festive celebrations during Ghanta Parba, Chaita Parba, Shiv Ratri and Dussehra are held every year.
